The Town of Wiley is named for W. M. Wiley, who was a resident of Holly, and president of the Holly Sugar Company. Wiley is a pleasant rural community located 10 miles north and west of Lamar on State Highway 287. This quaint community was once the home of five churches, and as a well established town had a hotel, restaurants, a drug store and pharmacist, a livery stable, a blacksmith shop, a pool hall, hardware stares, a shoe shop, a millinery shop, a confectionery, grocery store, a meat market, lumber yard, auto garage, a brick factory, a creamery and cheese factory, a pickle processing plant, a turkey processing plant and a newspaper, the Wiley Journal. At that time the Town boasted 95 citizens.
Today the Town of Wiley has 460 residents, most of whom work in neighboring Lamar. The town of served by a progressive Bank, a medical clinic, Tuckers Grocery, whose motto is “Tucker’s Top Meat at Top Prices”, and several agricultural related businesses. Life in the Wiley community revolves around the wonderful school system and the remaining three local churches. The slogan for the Town’s annual festival, Hay Days, best describes the emphasis of our community: “Down Wiley way its Kids and Hay”.
